Residents of Independence Landing lead active lives with weekly activities including fitness programs, yoga, gardening, zumba, and outdoor lawn games. Additionally, they have access to the newly added 42 acre adjacent city park and Southwood walking and biking trails, golf course, and tennis courts.
Our Supported Living Coaches work closely with residents to offer weekly activities and workshops aimed at enhancing their independent living skills. The commercial-grade kitchen at Independence Landing serves not only to provide nutritious evening meals but also as a space for teaching basic meal preparation and workforce development.
Residents engage in hands-on learning and practice in key areas of independent living, including housekeeping, budgeting, money management, self-care, hygiene, and the safe and effective use of public transportation. They also explore building positive relationships with fellow residents and neighbors, with other topics selected based on individual interests. Additionally, residents continue to develop vocational and job-related skills, with the ultimate goal of securing and maintaining meaningful employment.
The key to creating a vibrant, supportive community lies in the strength of our activities and programming. This sets our residential property apart from others. We place a strong emphasis on social engagement, offering opportunities for residents to connect through shared evening meals with fellow residents and guests, as well as activities with neighbors, family members, and non-disabled mentors. Our social calendar includes cook-outs, movie nights, ice cream socials, volunteer opportunities in the community, outings to college ball games, and other events chosen by residents themselves. These activities help foster a sense of belonging, connection, and enjoyment.
With a city bus stop and a nearby park right next to Independence Landing, residents have convenient access to all that Tallahassee has to offer. The Southwood community is within walking and biking distance to a variety of amenities, including doctor’s offices, restaurants, grocery and drug stores, and potential job sites. Additionally, Florida law requires state agencies to hire a certain percentage of individuals from the disabled community, and many of these agencies are located just a short bus ride or walk from Independence Landing. Residents also have opportunities to engage with numerous civic and faith-based organizations, as well as local neighbors and hobby groups, all of which enrich the lives of the residents and the broader community.
